CBL Sports won the 2023 T20 Championship with a resounding 6 wicket win over Customs Recreation Club played today at Ekuveni Cricket Ground, Malé.

CRC won the toss and chose to bat first and the CBL bowlers put in a shift of accuracy and pressure to take 7 wickets and restrict the CRC batsmen to an 85 run total. Haziq Hassan Rasheed and Shius Fareed scored 18 runs each whilst Naween Perera and Nalaka Jayaweera took 2 wickets apiece. 

In reply, CBL Sports Eranda Bandara led the charge scoring 32 runs to anchor his team towards the 86 target which they reached in style in the 13th Over. 

At the end of the match a presentation ceremony took place in a jubilant atmosphere to round-off an enjoyable competition. 

Chief Guests, CBM President Mohamed Faisal, CBM Excom member Ahmed Kaleem and CBM Umpires Committee member MV Kumar presented the following awards:

The Cricket Board of Maldives thanks all the players, team officials and match officials for their efforts to play this competition in the Spirit of Cricket and in particular the opportunities provided players to gain valuable experience in match-play cricket. 

The remainder of 2023 domestic cricket will see an emphasis on junior and women’s cricket with various competitions and programmes scheduled around the country. 

On an international level, the Men’s National Squad will be representing Maldives at the International Cricket Council T20 World Cup Qualifiers and the 2023 Asian Games whilst the Men’s U19 Squad will be participating in the Asian Cricket Council East Zone Premier Cup; all three tournaments held in late September through October.

The 2023 Maldives T20 Championship began on August 18th and went on until September 8th. Set at Ekuveni Cricket Ground in Malé, this tournament was an enjoyable experience for players and sports fans alike.

Featuring six teams that confirmed their participation in this second-tier T20 tournament. This year, for the first time, the stakes are high, as the tournament held the key to a coveted promotion to the Maldives T20 Premier League in 2024.

The tournament showcased a total of six participating teams, divided into two groups. This grouping ensured a riveting contest as each team vied for supremacy within their group. With every match carrying immense weight, the players’ determination and strategy was put to the test as they battled for a shot to be Champions and automatically promoted.

The opening clash of the 2023 Maldives T20 Championship unfolded today at Ekuveni Cricket Ground in Malé between AIZY Academy and Comets Cricket Club. In a match that delivered a solid result for AIZY, as they emerged victorious by a commanding margin of 49 runs, marking a strong start to the tournament.

AIZY Academy won the toss and elected to bat first, a decision that would shape the course of the match. Displaying a blend of cautious approach and calculated aggression, AIZY Academy’s batsmen put up a good show, posting a total of 157 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their allotted overs.

Mohamed Aflah spearheaded the innings with a stellar performance, contributing a vital 48 runs from 36 deliveries. His calculated strokes and confidence at the crease laid the foundation for the competitive target. Sasanka Maduwantha’s unbeaten 31 runs from 18 balls added crucial impetus to AIZY’s innings, bolstering their final score.

Player of the Match – Mohamed Aflah

Comets Cricket Club’s bowlers battled hard to contain AIZY’s innings. Sajidh and Mohamed Saabir emerged as the standout performers, each claiming 2 wickets to put the brakes on AIZY’s momentum. Despite their efforts, AIZY Academy managed to set a challenging target for their opponents.

With a target of 158 runs for victory, Kamrul Mirdha displayed resilience amidst the challenging circumstances, emerging as the top scorer for Comets with 29 runs. However, the collective efforts of AIZY Academy’s bowlers proved overwhelming, leading to Comets’ eventual total of 108 runs all-out.

AIZY Academy’s bowlers showcased a stellar performance, with notable contributions from multiple players. Their disciplined and coordinated effort in restricting the opposition’s run flow ultimately proved to be the decisive factor in the match.

The action resumes on Saturday, 19th August, with two exciting fixtures lined up. The day will commence with New Star taking on CBL Sports at 8:00 AM, followed by an afternoon clash between Customs and Comets Cricket Club at 2:00 PM.

CBL Sports emerged triumphant against New Star in a battle during the 2023 Maldives T20 Championship. The match showcased remarkable performances from both sides, ultimately resulting in CBL Sports securing victory by a margin of 31 runs.

CBL Sports, opting to bat first, laid down a foundation of resilience and calculated aggression to set the tone for the match. Their batsmen accumulated a total of 155 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their 20 overs.

Mohamed Fauzan proved to be a pivotal figure for CBL Sports, crafting a valuable knock of 47 runs. His innings laid a solid groundwork for his team’s batting performance. Contributing significantly to the total, Eranda Bandara’s composed 36-run innings added further strength to CBL Sports’ scorecard.

Kasun Madhushanka displayed a fine bowling effort, claiming 2 crucial wickets. Meanwhile, New Star’s captain, Mano Ganasingh, led by example by scalping 3 wickets, a testament to his leadership and skill on the field.

Ekuveni Cricket Ground in Malé witnessed cricketing skills as Customs Recreation Club (CRC) clashed with Comets Cricket Club in a thrilling encounter during the 2023 Maldives T20 Championship. CRC emerged victorious, sealing their triumph by 33 runs.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, CRC set the stage for a vital innings that would leave an indelible mark on the match. Openers, Ishaq Ahmed and No. 5 batsman Muawiyath Abdul Ghanee, were the architects of their batting innings.

Ishaq Ahmed showcased his batting with a resilient 60-run knock, setting a solid foundation for his team. However, it was Muawiyath Abdul Ghanee who stole the show with an astounding 55 runs from a mere 19 balls. His blistering innings, featuring six maximums, injected immense momentum into CRC’s total. Youngster Shius Fareed also played a crucial role, contributing a valuable 37 runs to bolster the team’s score.

CRC’s determined batting effort culminated in a formidable total of 185 runs for the loss of 8 wickets, a score that would undoubtedly test Comets Cricket Club’s mettle.

Comets Cricket Club, tasked with a challenging target of 186 runs for victory, entered the fray with determination. Ibrahim Ali emerged as a standout performer, spearheading the chase with an exceptional innings of 76 runs. His resilient knock was laced with determination and skill to find a way through for his team.

Despite Ibrahim Ali’s efforts, the collective strength of CRC’s bowlers proved to be a formidable obstacle. Ibrahim Shaaz Habeeb’s crafty swing bowling accounted for the dismissals of both Comets’ opening batsmen, a pivotal contribution to CRC’s cause. Rassam Rasheed also joined the wicket-taking brigade, securing two crucial wickets to further derail Comets’ chase.

As the dust settled on this contest, CRC celebrated a resounding victory by a notable margin of 33 runs. 

The match showcased the dynamic nature of T20 cricket, with explosive batting, strategic bowling, and moments of individual brilliance on display. New Star edges out Fuvahmulah Cricket Academy in a tight contest.

In a gripping match during today’s 2023 Maldives T20 Championship fixture, New Star and Fuvahmulah Cricket Academy (FCA) battled down to the last over. New Star ultimately secured victory by a slim margin of 2 wickets at Ekuveni Cricket Ground, Malé.

FCA chose to bat first, reaching 120/8 with Habakkala Kankanange scoring 32 and Miyanadeniya Kasun Induranga adding 25. New Star’s Kasun Madhushanka and Mano Ganasingh each took 2 wickets.

In response, Kasun Madhushanka’s heroic 56 off 43 balls guided New Star to victory with only 4 balls left. FCA’s bowlers Mohamed Athas, Sampath Bandara, and Miyandeniya claimed 2 wickets each, but New Star’s resilience prevailed.

This close encounter exemplified the excitement that can be created at all levels of T20 cricket.

CRC beat AIZY by 7 wickets in today’s first match. CRC’s Yoosuf Azyan’s powerful unbeaten 110* off 60 balls led the chase of AIZY’s 141/6.

AIZY chose to bat first and scored 141/6. Mohamed Rabbi top-scored with 39 & Mohamed Saeed took 2 wickets for CRC.

CRC’s skilled batting and Azyan’s exceptional performance defined the match and earned him the Player of the Match award.

CBL Sports (CBL) v Fuvahmulah Cricket Academy (FCA)
CBL won by 1 wicket

CBL edged past FCA by 1 wicket in a thrilling contest. Late drama unfolded as CBL chased down 128 with just 1 wicket and 5 balls to spare.

FCA scored 128/7; Sachin Ridma made 42. CBL bowlers Dilshan, Fauzan took 2 wickets each.

In reply, CBL’s chase, led by Fernando (34) and Perera (28*), sealed victory.

AIZY v NEW STAR
New Star won by 4 wickets

The first SemiFinal today was a washout and see’s Customs Recreation Club progress to the Final of this years competition care of a superior Net Run Rate over CBL Sports. CBL Sports will play New Star in the Semi-Final contest on Saturday.

New Star continued their quest to the Final match by defeating AIZY today in the afternoons match. Winning the toss, AIZY chose to bat first. The teak-bodied Abdulla Shahid opened the batting and scored 37 from 36 balls. Mohamed Ryan was the next highest scorer with 18 from 24 balls.
After this positive start, the New Star bowlers fought back to take wickets at key times to prevent AIZY from making any meaningful partnerships. 

Bowler Shahid took 3 wickets and Ahmed Rasmy stole the show with 4 wickets for 24 runs from 3 Overs ending AIZY’s innings on 120 all-out. In reply, New Star took 18.4 Overs to reach the target. Shafique scored 37 from 26 balls to set up a strong foundation. Kasun Madhushaka scored 29.
Anand & Shahid were not-out at the end and saw their team progress to the Semi-Final.
