The Maldives national cricket team departed for Sri Lanka today on a nine-day training trip, the final phase of preparation before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028 Sub Regional Qualifier in Malaysia, which runs from 6–15 October.
The squad for the qualifier was confirmed at a jersey handover ceremony in Malé on 18 September.
The training camp runs until 5 October. During it, the national team will play two friendly matches against Sri Lanka Cricket’s High Performance team, both at Galle International Cricket Stadium, and will train on natural turf wickets throughout. The purpose of the camp is to give the players match experience on natural turf before the tournament in Malaysia.
Training in Sri Lanka is being supervised by Afghan coach Asadullah Khan, and the practice matches have been arranged with the assistance and cooperation of Sri Lanka Cricket.
The team, captained by Hassan Haziq, is scheduled to travel on to Malaysia on 5 October. Its first match of the qualifier will be against China, on Thursday, 8 October.
ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028 Sub Regional Qualifier — Group B
The qualifier is split into two groups. Maldives is in Group B alongside China, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong China.
- Group A: Bahrain, Bhutan, Kuwait, Mongolia, Myanmar, Qatar, Thailand
- Group B: Maldives, China, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong China
The top two teams from each group qualify for the Regional Finals.
