2022 National Women’s T20 Cricket Shield – A Catalyst for the Future of Women’s Cricket

The best of the nations Women’s cricketers are back on the tournament scene this year with a representative team from each of the cricket playing areas of Maldives.

2 time winners L. Kunahandhoo will be looking to make it 3 in 3 whilst first time winners back in 2017, Fuvahmulah City will be eager to show their talents. Thirdly, 2 time beaten finalists Malé City, will be trying to get the win on home soil.

Women’s cricket is an important part of the Cricket Board of Maldives and 2022 has seen many foundations created to ensure a sure footing of player recruitment, development and retainment over the coming years.

For example, a player starting out on their cricketing journey this year can play in the regional ‘Softball Cricket Cups’, be then selected for this National T20 Competition and be in with a chance to be selected in the 2023 Maldives National Squad to take part in International Training Camps and Competitions.

2023 will also see the creation of the very first Women’s High Performance Programme dedicated to the best of the best players with professional staff tailoring the personal and group development.

This T20 flagship tournament is a fantastic way for the best players to get together and solidify their existing player friendships and create new links that will serve them well in their player development pathway.
Teams have a maximum of 20 Overs per Innings and 11 players make up the on-field team with 3 reserves permitted for this tournament.

Matches are scheduled to begin on the 28th December and continue until a Grand Final on 6th January 2023 – all matches being played at Ekuveni Cricket Ground, Malé.
