It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of Mr. Mohamed Umar Manik, a pioneering entrepreneur, visionary leader, and lifelong patron of cricket in the Maldives.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mr. Manik will be remembered most fondly for his generosity, humility, and unwavering dedication to the growth of Maldivian cricket. His journey in the sport began in 1969 while studying in East Pakistan, where his love for the game first took root. Upon returning home, he became a central figure in shaping the cricketing landscape of the Maldives.
Throughout the 1980s, he played in all the major opening matches and annual charity fixtures, leaving his mark as both a player and an ambassador for the sport. His service extended well beyond the field: he guided the Cricket Board of Maldives as Honorary Chairman for over a decade, where his leadership and vision elevated the game. He also played a leading role in the Maldives Cricket Foundation. He also provided continuous financial and moral support to the Board and local clubs, ensuring countless opportunities for young players to pursue their passion.
Mr. Manik’s tireless contributions earned him admiration and respect not only across the Maldives but around the globe. His name will forever be etched in the history of our nation as one of its true builders and a source of inspiration for generations to come.
We salute his lifelong service and honor his memory. May Allah (SWT) grant him eternal peace, forgive his shortcomings, and bless him with the highest rank in Jannah.
