Maldives Cricket celebrates International Women’s Day 2021

Cricket Board of Maldives President spearheaded the push to celebrate International Women’s Day on 8th March 2021 by sharing a video online pledging that by the end of 2021 there will be at least 2 women coaches and 2 women umpires in our programme regions of Malé City, Fuvahmulah City and the island of L. Kunahandhoo.

Faisal also pledged to work with the CBM Members to revise the Cricket Board of Maldives Constitution to mandate having at least 1 woman in the CBM Executive Committee and all the CBM Sub-Committees.

Players from around the country took part, although restricted by social distancing measures, to send their messages of support and encouragement on this International Women’s Day.

Players and coaches, Aishath Aima and Shaara Ahmed Haleem Ibrahim used the hashtag #ChooseToChallenge to request girls and women to be involved in sports and to make cricket more inclusive and encourage all to show their talents.

Maldives Cricket is committed to equal opportunities for both genders and for all ages and abilities. A woman member representative was elected to the Executive Committee for the first time in the 2020 CBM election.

Internationally, cricket has been inclusive of women for over 50 years with the pay structures between men and women becoming more and more inline. Perhaps the greatest show of women’s cricket popularity was the 86,000 spectators that packed into the MCG in Australia last year to watch the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Final.
